Accelerate New Mexico
Popejoy Hall
Building the Future for Students, Faculty, and Communities
Popejoy Hall is the flagship performing arts center in New Mexico and is the only venue that entertains, inspires, and educates 250,000 patrons each year on a university campus.
With your support, we will continue to realize our vision to serve as the state’s most outstanding cultural center and premier destination for the performing arts in New Mexico.
Overview:
Through the Accelerate New Mexico campaign we will address some of our greatest challenges. With your help, we want to realize the following high-priority initiatives for all New Mexicans.
List of Priorities:
-
Launched in the spring of 2023, Broadway for Teens embodies a commitment to excellence in the arts and fills a critical gap for students attending Title 1 public high schools in New Mexico, many of whom have never seen a Broadway show or set foot on a college campus. The education and outreach program has welcomed over 600 Title 1 high school students from New Mexico’s urban, rural, and tribal communities, contributing to the quality of life, growth, and advancement of New Mexico’s youth.
Broadway for Teens has strengthened the existing Popejoy Hall Excellence Fund Endowment to nearly $1 million. Our goal is to increase the endowment to $5 million.
$4 million of philanthropic funding will allow us to enhance and expand the impact of the Popejoy Hall Excellence Fund Endowment.
-
A large steel beam or pillar known as the Killer Pillar is located directly above the loading dock entrance, making loading larger sets through the dock almost impossible. Popejoy’s new Killer Pillar initiative involves completely renovating the current loading dock to allow Popejoy to attract larger productions by streamlining and enhancing production and performance spaces.
The new, upgraded, pillar-free loading dock will help to ensure that Popejoy Hall remains the flagship of New Mexico’s performing arts facilities by bringing larger and more complex productions to our New Mexican audiences right here at UNM.
$4 million of philanthropic funding will realize this transformational new project for Popejoy Hall.
-
The performing arts mirror and articulate our emotions, energize us, and bring us joy. Through the Fine Art of Living for Seniors initiative, Popejoy Hall seeks to improve the quality of life and community wellness for low-income seniors by fueling a robust arts industry in our state for all to enjoy. This new endowment fund will provide opportunities for disadvantaged seniors to attend top Broadway and Popejoy Presents productions at no cost, to experience live theater and enjoy an enhanced and more joyful life, connected through a shared audience experience.
$1 million of philanthropic funding will realize this vital new initiative.
-
The Popejoy Schooltime Series is the largest performing arts education program in the state, welcoming public schools, private schools, Pueblo schools, and home schools. Students from K-12 join us for exciting learning experiences in languages, fine arts, social studies, science, and literature. Each season’s shows augment the curriculum established by Albuquerque and Rio Rancho Public Schools to provide new, innovative ways of bringing classroom subject material to life for New Mexico’s students.
Since its inception in 1996, The Schooltime Series has welcomed almost 1 million New Mexican schoolchildren to experience live theater on a vibrant college campus. The Schooltime Series provides exciting and innovative educational experience that opens the world of the imagination, creativity, and learning for New Mexico’s children (K-12). Attending world class performances at Popejoy Hall is a life-changing experience that enriches students’ intellectual and personal development. With additional funding for the Schooltime Series, Popejoy Hall strives to expand and create new learning opportunities for our children through the performing arts.
$500,000 in philanthropic funding would allow us to expand this life-enhancing initiative.
In summary
Through Accelerate New Mexico, we are seeking philanthropic support for these initiatives:
$4 million for the Popejoy Hall Excellence Fund Endowment (Broadway for Teens)
$4 million for the Killer Pillar campaign
$1 million for the Fine Art of Living for Seniors program
$500,000 for the Popejoy Hall Schooltime Series
