Accelerate New Mexico
Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center
Building the Future for Students, Faculty, and Communities
The Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC) advances health and health equity as New Mexico’s only publicly accessible health sciences library. We empower evidence-based health care, intellectual discovery, lifelong learning, and engagement with our diverse communities by providing high-quality and unique collections; integrated education and programs; and innovative, inclusive spaces.
HSLIC has many challenges. Through your generous support during the Accelerate New Mexico campaign, we can surmount these obstacles.
Overview:
HSLIC provides technology-enabled, versatile spaces for all Health Sciences Center (HSC) learners and partner with students, staff, and faculty across HSC and the broader New Mexico community to ensure access to health information. We have curated the largest collection of information on health of Indigenous North Americans, and we offer expertise in finding health information to advance evidence-based practice. Although our library is accessible to the public, we focus on student success and student-centric spaces on campus. Through our work, we are leaders in justice, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
However, increasing our collections is expensive, as is sustaining our unique programs, particularly our Native Health Database (NHD). We want to ensure we have an appropriate and contemporary space for our students’ needs and our materials. In addition, our facilities and infrastructure are aging.
List of Priorities:
-
HSLIC is the only unit that supports all HSC students and is a key part of their learning experience. Creating an endowed student success fund will allow HSLIC to enhance student support throughout the library space and programming, while also providing student training experiences.
We aim to enhance our physical library space for students as innovations in library science develop; support innovative programming to enhance the student experience across disciplines, while also allowing HSLIC to collaborate with student groups to create student-driven programming; and provide stipends for practicum and internship students working in the library. These opportunities give students hands-on experience in working with health information and archival materials and help students build the skills needed to work with public libraries in the future.
$100,00 of philanthropic funding will help us create an endowed student success fund.
-
The NHD, the largest collection of information related to the health of Indigenous North Americans, is a distinctive feature and strength of the HSLIC. It is used globally, and the oldest piece in its collection dates to the 1600s. The NHD impacts the healthcare of communities in New Mexico – including 23 pueblos, tribes, and nations – and beyond, serves as a clinical resource.
Philanthropic support through Accelerate New Mexico would create an NHD endowment to fund one full-time staff person plus student employee support; allow Indigenous communities and their collaborators to add their own content to the collection, which will make the NHD more equitable and empower communities to share information in the way they desire; and create long-term sustainability for the NHD.
$3.5 million of philanthropic funding will help us create an NHD endowment fund.
-
HSLIC partners with the entire HSC and supports the broader New Mexico community. Our spaces, services, and collections are essential to advancing health and health equity for New Mexicans.
Philanthropic funding in this priority area would help HSLIC advance its mission, enhance its strengths, and keep up with HSC growth; allow for trials of new, innovative resources; support open-access publishing funding and innovative educational technology; provide professional development for HSLIC employees; and facilitate the creation of refreshed, innovative spaces for students, employees, and other library patrons.
$100,000 million of philanthropic funding will fund HSLIC program expansion.
-
Libraries are a critical component of student success. HSLIC’s facility plays a significant role in student success through its wide variety of study spaces, access to computers and large-screen monitors, and an extensive range of audiovisual and physical materials. A recent renovation of the third floor resulted in significant improvements for students; but the second floor, which is the main floor of the library, does not meet the needs of today’s students and is inflexible in design. The building is over 40 years old, and this renovation will update the floor to match the recently remodeled third floor, providing a more modern feel to the building and better addressing the needs of students and visitors.
The renovation will create a modern, student-focused space, updated library reception desk area, and updated conference and classroom spaces. It will allow HSLIC’s second floor to offer students what they need for success and improved accessibility while creating flexibility for the future. Finally, it will address students’ changing needs by providing more collaborative study spaces, galley space, virtual reality space, and 3D printing.
$1.5 million of philanthropic funding will allow us to renovate the second floor of HSLIC.
In summary
Through the Accelerate New Mexico campaign, the HSLIC is seeking:
$100,000 in philanthropic support for an endowed student success fund
$3.5 million for an NHD endowment fund
$100,000 to fund HSLIC program expansion
$1.5 million for HSLIC renovation
