Accelerate New Mexico
College of Pharmacy
Building the Future for Students, Faculty, and Communities
The UNM College of Pharmacy (CoP), the University’s first health profession school and the state’s only pharmacy school, was founded in 1945. Today, the CoP’s world-class clinical and basic science faculty develops pharmacists, educators, and scientists in an inclusive environment whose leadership, dedication, and innovation improve the health of our communities. We aim to advance health access, equity, and outcomes through our leadership in pharmacy practice, research, and education. We instill values of excellence, integrity, accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, diversity, and compassion into our students.
With pharmacy’s role continually expanding, the CoP sees an opportunity to shape its future through a comprehensive campaign: Advancing Pharmacy. This $6 million campaign is key to the continued growth of the pharmacy profession and New Mexico’s only College of Pharmacy.
Overview:
The CoP aspires to be at the forefront of pharmacy education, patient care, research and as a champion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The Advancing Pharmacy campaign provides us with an opportunity to achieve these ambitious goals.
The CoP endeavors to support our Lobo pharmacists and scientists during their training and throughout their professional careers with rich experiences, a state-of-the-art facility, and targeted programmatic support. Within our campaign, we have identified six areas where philanthropic support can elevate and shape the future both in New Mexico and beyond.
List of Priorities:
-
For the first time in 50 years, the CoP has a building fully dedicated to its use. Currently, the College maintains a presence in seven other buildings across the Health Sciences Center campus, with plans to reduce that footprint to four. With the completion of the College of Nursing’s new facility, Nursing vacated shared first floor and the top two floors of the shared CoP/CoN building. This space is currently being renovated to fully meet our needs.
Our goal is to deliver a clearly defined and beautiful path forward—both physically and academically. We aim to create spaces that are welcoming and accessible to all students, faculty, and community members; encourage growth and collaboration in the study of nature and science, with an emphasis on wellness and sustainability; and utilize the latest technology to drive innovation. Finally, our vision is grounded in local culture—honoring New Mexico’s past while building a foundation that can evolve over time and position the College as a leader in New Mexico’s future.
UNM HSC/CoP leadership has worked with national renowned architects (Vigil & Associates/Architekton) to design a forward-thinking functional space program and concept design for the College of Pharmacy with the following pragmatic goals:
Meet both initial and projected needs for teaching, wet and dry lab research, faculty and staff workplace, and student enrichment and study space.
Develop the existing CoP building to its highest and best use.
Consolidate the CoP as much as possible, facilitating research and teaching conversations and collaborations.
Through visioning workshops and listening sessions, the CoP developed these additional aspiration guiding principles for our building renovation:
To deliver a clearly defined and beautiful path forward—physically and academically
To be welcoming and accessible to students, faculty, and community
To support wellness and sustainability by encouraging growth and collaboration in the study of nature and science
To utilize the latest technology to push innovation and access
To promote flexibility and transparency within the department and embrace autonomy for faculty, staff, and students so that they may pursue their own journey and discoveries.
To be grounded in the local culture with a foundation that is prepared to evolve over time
The Phase 1 renovation of CoP creates a welcoming, future-ready environment that strengthens our identity and long-term impact. A high-performance façade improves energy efficiency and increases natural daylight deep into the building, while modernized systems and flexible, collaborative spaces support innovation, learning, and community across the UNM campus.
A transformational new home for the College of Pharmacy offers meaningful naming opportunities across our teaching, research, student, and community spaces. These opportunities allow donors to create a legacy while directly supporting pharmacy education, research, and healthcare access for New Mexico.
Ranging from premier building and floor naming to classrooms, research suites, student success spaces, and community-focused areas, naming opportunities provide options that align with a wide range of philanthropic interests and investment levels.
$X million of philanthropic funding will help us breathe new life into our existing infrastructure.
-
One of our top ongoing priorities is to boost scholarships and professional development opportunities for pharmacy students—especially for those facing housing and food insecurity. PharmD students, who are at the graduate level, are therefore ineligible for the lottery and opportunity scholarships that benefit many other students. By recruiting and supporting top New Mexico students in pharmacy, we ensure future PharmD success and enrich healthcare provision in the state.
In addition, the CoP aims to offset travel costs for students to pursue clinical rotations in the rural areas of New Mexico. This initiative exposes students to addressing healthcare needs in underserved populations.
$X million of philanthropic funding will help us support our students.
Our research faculty are conducting more than 72 projects while engaging students in research that finds and evaluates strategies to reduce health disparities in New Mexico. They leverage philanthropic support to bring funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other federal grants into our state.
Current research projects include evaluations of farming and ranching capabilities in our state; direct interventions to prevent and treat diabetes and substance use, especially for children and young people; improving access to physical healthcare facilities, especially for rural New Mexico; increasing access to behavioral and mental healthcare across the state; maternal-child health; and more.
$1 million of philanthropic funding will help us establish endowed chairs, professorships, and post-doctoral fellowships.
-
Recruiting and retaining exceptional faculty allows faculty members to provide outstanding education to our students and trainees, explore new research avenues, and advance the practice of pharmacy, thereby enhancing patient care throughout New Mexico.
$X million of philanthropic funding will help us realize this initiative.
-
Two of the CoP’s strategic priorities is to foster community engagement that addresses community concerns and healthcare needs in New Mexico, and to partner with organizations that support our mission. To achieve these goals, the College aims to:
Strengthen community outreach across New Mexico by providing funds for strategic and operational costs to provide healthcare services to disadvantaged New Mexicans.
Enhance health equity within rural and underserved communities by supporting the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center. The poison center is staffed by pharmacists who provide 24-hour assistance with poisoning emergencies, drug information inquiries, and addiction. This service is free and confidential to all New Mexicans, including health care providers.
$X million of philanthropic funding will help us realize this initiative.
