Accelerate New Mexico
College of Education and Human Sciences
Building the Future for Students, Faculty, and Communities
The College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) is a community of educational scholars informed by the experiences of students, families, and communities, preparing professionals to bring effective service and leadership through high-quality inquiry, scholarship, and engagement. Through our partnerships, we ensure quality, responsive, and impactful results for New Mexico with equitable and beneficial outcomes for all stakeholders. We are committed to education, health, wellness, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice for all New Mexicans.
Through Accelerate New Mexico, we want to address our most pressing needs: improving facilities, upgrading equipment, providing funding for students, and supporting professional development and research.
Overview:
As the sole College of Education in the state, we are distinctive in our offering of model programs in teacher education and educational leadership, and innovative programs to address New Mexico K-12 educational, health, and wellness issues. COEHS also prepares qualified professionals to help children and families reach their full potential related to education and well-being.
Additionally, COEHS is the sole provider in the State of New Mexico of numerous academic programs that lead to licensure or certification in their respective fields and help to fill the workforce gap for the state’s education and health agencies and clinics. The College has the only pro bono counseling clinic in the region. COEHS is also home to the Institute of American Indian Education (IAIE), which leads teaching, educational leadership, and research initiatives that address the needs of Indigenous New Mexicans across the state.
List of Priorities:
-
Clinics and laboratories need high-quality facilities and equipment to support student clinical experiences, and faculty and student research, and to generate outcome-based research to support future health initiatives. Programs that require clinical experience from students include counselor education, nutrition and dietetics, athletic training, and exercise science. Equipment for research, learning, and safety in many of these programs is very expensive and requires continuous repair or replacement.
$2 million of philanthropic support will fund this initiative.
-
This is a new fund designed to overcome unforeseen obstacles to succeeding in college and graduating career-ready to advance New Mexico’s educational sector as teachers, leaders, and other school-based professionals. In a state with a public education system ranked 50th in the nation, we need qualified, passionate, and innovative teachers and educational leaders to increase our present success and future sustainability. This new, flexible funding would allow the college to bridge the gap for students who might otherwise choose to drop out because they do not have the resources individually, in their families, or from their communities to address unforeseen expenses.
$1.5 million of philanthropic support will fund this initiative.
-
COEHS wants to provide the most outstanding doctoral students with one year of funding to train them to be outstanding instructors before moving them into college funded Teaching Assistant (TA) and Graduate Assistant (GA) positions. Doctoral students who hold these positions are critical to the research success of the faculty they work with and teach many of the College’s courses. The skill of their teaching has a direct impact on the quality of education offered by the College.
$2 million of philanthropic support will fund this initiative.
-
Many post-graduate students who are experiencing high unmet financial need are studying to work in professions critical to the health and economic development of the state. Unfortunately, many of these professions such as licensed mental health counseling and school counseling are not highly paid, despite being critical to helping the state address issues including trauma and substance use disorder.
$2 million of philanthropic support will fund this initiative.
-
New Mexico is 50th in the country in public education. To address this urgent situation, we need research and policy scientists to provide real-world solutions to this pressing and chronic problem. K-12 education represents 40% of the state’s budget, and the state needs to have a clear picture of effective solutions and a center to test new possibilities. Funding for this Educational Outcomes Center will enable the research and policy staff to engage in this important work to improve public education in New Mexico.
The work of the Educational Outcomes Center will inform the legislative and executive branches about what does and does not work, what requires funding, and what policies and implementation are needed. The state does not currently have such a center, and as the flagship and only R1 university in the state, UNM is the natural home for it.
$3.25 million of philanthropic support will allow us to fulfill this initiative.
-
This initiative will help faculty and graduate students to further their professional development, to ensure they are engaged with the most current trends in their discipline, to participate in innovative research, and to advance their careers in New Mexico. It would also make possible their participation in national and international discourse, and to share UNM’s excellence and innovation with the world, while bringing fresh ideas back to New Mexico. This fund will help to keep UNM educators at the forefront of their fields, keep doctoral programs robust and growing, and help the College to further its reputation with greater engagement at the national and global level.
$2 million of philanthropic support will fund this initiative.
